THE CELEBRATION for Jamaica's phenomenal performance at the Beijing Olympics has just began, and one of the places where diehard motorsport fans will be frolicking at the Palisadoes International Raceway in Kingston.
"We will be having a little music at the track," says Neil Williams, who is still in the Olympics spirit.
It is race meet number eight and the nation's go-karters will be going all out to cement their places in their respective classes. The meet was postponed last week because of the threat of tropical storm Fay.
The action is scheduled to begin at 9:30 a.m. when competitors race against the clock in a bid to qualify on the grid. The first event will get under way at noon.
A week ago, Colin Daley Jr, Matthew Williams, Sabrina Sirgany and Thomas Issa were among a number of karters who turned out at the track for a practise session, but storm conditions prematurely ended their activities.
Preparation meet
Daley, Philip Myers and Mario Mair will be using the meet as part of their preparation for the big international race meet in Wisconsin, United States, next month.
At the pre-race tryout held recently, three Jamaicans did satisfactorily. They will be assisted by Ryca Racing Company, which is based in Miami.
Today's meet is expected to be dominated by Jonathan Law, Peter 'PJ' Moodie, Joel Jackson, Peter Rae, Chris Myers, Daley, and Philip Myers (no relation to Chris) in their respective classes.
After her debut a month ago at the Dover circuit, Ardenne High upper-sixth form student Ornealla Leahong should have learned from that experience, and should be now ready to take on Chris Myers, Joel Jackson and siblings in the Rotax International Class.
The races promise to be exciting, just as the rivalry displayed at last month's international go-kart race meet.
