Cops charged with sexual assault

The two policemen who were accused of sexually assaulting a woman in Portmore, St Catherine, last week have been charged, following a ruling by the Director of Public Prosecutions.

They are to appear in the Spanish Town Resident Magistrate's Court on Monday.

The charges against Corporal Hopeton Reid and Constable Jermaine Anderson include extortion, abduction, breaches of the Corruption Prevention Act and indecent assault.

The policemen were taken into custody after the woman reported that she was forced to perform lewd sexual acts on them. They are also accused of accepting a bribe from the woman and her male partner after finding them in a compromising position along the Hellshire Beach.

GSAT court battle ends

The parents of the Grade Six Achievement Test student who was wrongfully denied the Scotiabank Scholarship last year have withdrawn their claim for damages against the Ministry of Education.

The Ministry had earlier claimed Kristi Charles attended classes at an education centre where the test paper was leaked before the exam.

However, on April 25 Supreme Court Judge Bryan Sykes ruled that the approach taken by the ministry was wrong. The ministry accepted that it did not follow due process and awarded Kristi a scholarship valued at $205,000 a year over seven years or $1.43 million in total.

Huge arms and ammo recovery

The Kingston Metropolitan Region police have reported that, over the past 14 days, 28 weapons and more than 100 rounds of ammunition were recovered, while more than 200 arrests were made.

Karl Angell, director of communications in the Jamaica Constabulary Force (JCF), told The Gleaner yesterday that as a result of operations in the Kingston Metropolitan Region - including police divisions in St Catherine, three AK-47 assault rifles were seized among the 28 recovered weapons.

The other recoveries include 186 assorted rounds of ammunition and 231 persons were arrested for various offences ranging from serious to minor crimes.
