OCHO RIOS, St Ann:
Members of the St Ann Chamber of Commerce are seeking to have the official birthplace of National Hero Marcus Garvey replicated in the historic Seville property.
Garvey was born at 32 Market Street in St Ann's Bay but members of the Chamber feel that the birthplace should be replicated at a more suitable location where a development befitting the honour Garvey deserves can take place.
Speaking at the St Ann Chamber of Commerce quarterly press conference held at the Hibiscus Lodge in Ocho Rios last Thursday, president of the chamber, Norma Walters, said the proposal had already been sent to the Jamaica National Heritage Trust for its support.
Difficulties
According to Walters, for years there has been much difficulty trying to acquire 32 Market Street and greater emphasis is now being placed on heritage tourism. To compound matters, Walters said, the property would not be able to accommodate any major development.
"We are saying that in terms of the parking and the visibility, if we move it and we have an authentic replica of the home, it can be done well," said Walters, voicing the sentiments of the chamber.
The president also said the official birthplace was in need of much attention but it would be better if that focus were placed on moving it to the much larger Seville property.
The estate, located at the western end of St Ann's Bay where three cultures, the African, the European and the Amerindian had their first encounter in the 16th century, is posited as the starting point of civilised Jamaica.
It is the site of the first capital of Jamaica and the place where, after being shipwrecked, Christopher Columbus spent one year (the longest period of time he spent in one place in any Caribbean territory).
Walters said it was time for Seville to be utilised as a national heritage park and that the Garvey monument could be one of the feature attractions.
"We recommended, as well, for Seville that they do a replica of Christopher Columbus' ship," she added.
The chamber president said her organisation would continue to work towards improving commerce and the quality of life for the people of St Ann.
