The Editor, Sir:
In commendation of the prime minister's bold move to consider casino gambling in Jamaica, this is met with mixed feelings but if managed properly all will be well.
The fact of the matter is that casinos can provide opportunities for our tourism industry and a much-needed boost in employment. However, I fear one of the only ways something like this will work is if we adopt a similar approach to the Bahamas as it relates to the limitations on locals participating in gambling.
Protecting the country
Bahamas is home to a handful of world-class casinos that cater exclusively to vacationers and prohibit Bahamians from gambling. This is done to protect the country from a number of risks involving security of vacationers, crime control, and prostitution control, among others.
These potential casinos can become harmful to the economy and security of the country if they are placed within easy access to locals and, as such, I think the prime minister should look into the proper location of such entities when granting licences, etc. The PM should be mindful of the harm to the country if the initial stages aren't managed properly.
I am, etc.,
