NHT rate rise 'outrageous'
published: Thursday | April 24, 2008

The Editor, Sir:

I do commend Mr Golding's efforts to restore the viability of NHT in light of the devastating financial place that the company now sits. However, I strongly believe that his actions speak volumes about his level of care, concern and love for the Jamaican people, specifically, NHT mortgagors, like myself.

A salary increase is not in the making for us, come June 1. Additionally, like the country, we too have a budget that is very salary-governed. Consequently, to demand of us to increase our payments is simply outrageous and callous.

Frustrating homeowners

Moreover, in our contractual arrangement with NHT, the agreement that we share for rates increase relates only to insurance (peril insurance).

This move by Mr Golding indicates a move to prevent Jamaicans from owning their own home and to make it difficult for those Jamaicans who do, by implementing measures, such as this to frustrate homeowners. This is indeed quite colonial and backward.

I am, etc.,
