16-man squad selected for All-Star showdown
published: Sunday | April 20, 2008

Adrian Frater, News Editor

WESTERN BUREAU:

THE WESTERN Basketball Association (WBA) has selected a strong 16-man squad for today's one-match challenge against their Southern Conference All-Stars counterparts at National Stadium Courts starting at 6:00 p.m.

"We have had a squad in training for a few weeks now. The players selected for Sunday are those players who have made the final cut," said Deon Williams, the public relations officer for the WBA. "We believe these players will be able to give a good account of themselves in Kingston."

The full squad of players and the WBA teams to which they are affiliated is: Maurice Rodriques (Sav-la-Mar Hawks), Dillon Hodges (Sav-la-Mar Hawks), Kareem Hibbert (Sav-la-Mar Hawks), Richard Chambers (Manning's School), Dane Morris (Innercity Avalanche), Chayne Topey (Innercity Avalanche), Damian Smith (Innercity Avalanche), Cleon Morgan (Innercity Avalanche), Andre Uter (Granville Wolfpack), Vaughn Lee (Granville Wolfpack), Neville Claire (Hoopers), Andrae Morgan (Hoopers), Marlon Comrie (Hoopers), Dave Black (Railway Tigers), Jermaine Rerrie (Railway Tigers) and Caustant Holness (Railway Tigers).

The players got a last chance to sharpen their skills last night when most of them competed in the big Lucozade Sport Men's Basketball Championship tripleheader at the Montego Bay Cricket Club Courts, which was dubbed 'Super Saturday'.

"The three games were scheduled to give the players a final opportunity to sharpen their skills for the trip to Kingston," said Williams. "It is our sincere hope that all the players will be at their best for this game."

With a chance to impress the national selectors, the western players are expected to take the game seriously as, according to Williams, a lot of pride will be at stake.

"These players will be carrying the flag of western Jamaica's basketball and they know this is a special opportunity to show that we have very good talent here in the west," he said.
