Olympic champion Hayes for invitational
published: Sunday | April 20, 2008

Anthony Foster, Freelance Writer

OLYMPIC GAMES champion Joanna Hayes is the latest big-name athlete to be added to the Jamaica International Invitational meet set for May 3 at the National Stadium.

The 31-year-old Hayes, who won gold at the Athens Games in the 100m hurdles, will join a star-studded field already confirmed for the event.

Manager/agent Gregory Foster confirmed Hayes' participation on Friday.

"Yes, she is coming to the Jamaica International Invitational," Foster said. "We just confirmed her participation today (Friday)," Foster told The Gleaner in an telephone interview.

Fellow American

Hayes, who won the 1999 NCAA 400 hurdles title and a gold four years later at the Pan-Am Games, will join fellow American Lolo Jones, the World Indoor champion.

Apart from Hayes, the 1995 USA Juniors and Pan Am Junior 100 hurdles champion, and Jones, the sixth fastest woman in the world last year, Jamaicans Delloreen Ennis-London, the bronze medallist from last year's World Championships in Osaka, Vonette Dixon and Lacena Golding-Clarke, are the other world-class athletes down for the sprint obstacle event.

The Jamaica Invitational meet will feature world champions such as Veronica Campbell-Brown and Americans Tyson Gay and Kerron Clement along with Usain Bolt, Olympic silver medallist Danny McFarlane and Americans Sanya Richards and Wallace Spearmon.
