Last Sunday, a small television studio at the Creative Production and Training Centre offices bubbled over with female entertainers, others manning phones and media personnel all eager to make the Sisters to Sisters Mediathon a success.

Under the theme 'Females opening their arms and offering assistance to other females', these individuals all played an integral role in attempting to raise $10 million towards building shelters islandwide for abused women, and to support the Women's Centre Foundation of Jamaica.

The seven-hour musical event was broadcast live and organised by the Ministry of Information, Culture, Youth and Sports, in association with the Bureau of Women's Affairs, Women of the Jamaican Entertainment Fraternity, and others.

Pledges

Men, women and companies called in and made pledges from as small as $100 to $150,000 from Supreme Ventures.

Former magistrate-turned-entertainer, Carol Gonzalez DaCosta, presented her pledge in person, $100,000 from DaCosta Records, to Minister Olivia Grange.

Checks by The Gleaner on Wednesday revealed that numbers were still being verified but approximately $9 million had been received, and pledges were still coming in slowly. RBTT Tropical Plaza will be taking pledges until the end of April. Paymaster Jamaica Limited will do the same until the end of May.
