Updates on some controversial police shootings
published: Wednesday | April 16, 2008

A 19-year-old pregnant woman, Tian Wolf, was shot and killed by the police on September 18, 2007, during a demonstration in Yallahs, St Thomas. The Bureau of Special Investigations (BSI) said it completed the investigation and sent off the file to the director of public prosecutions (DPP) on November 16, 2007. They are now awaiting a ruling from the DPP.

André Thomas was controversially killed by the police on September 28, 2007. Investigations into the matter were completed and the file sent to the DPP on November 23, 2007. Since then, four policemen have been charged with murder. The matter is still before the courts.

Ravin Thompson was killed by the police on July 27, 2007. Allegations are that he was shot on Alexander Road, off Maxfield Avenue. Residents further alleged that he was taken away by the police and killed. Thompson was later pronounced dead at the Kingston Public Hospital. The BSI said investigation has since been completed and the file sent to the DPP on December 11, 2007.

On January 16, 2007, two men were shot and killed by the police in Glengoffe, St Catherine, which sparked a mass protest in that community. BSI detectives said their investigation is incomplete.

In January 2008, five men were killed during a police-military operation in Tivoli Gardens, west Kingston. Although this is one of the priority cases, the police said their investigation is incomplete. Prime Minister Bruce Golding had called for a coroner's inquest in the matter.

The case of Sandra Sewell was another major controversial case. Allegations are that she was killed in cold blood by members of the security forces in August Town, St Andrew, on July 9, 2002. The BSI said the matter has since been sent to the Coroner's Court.

On March 2, 2004, three men were slain by the police in Barham, Westmoreland. The investigation has been completed and the matter sent to the Coroner's Court.

Omar Dazevado was among three men killed by the police in Denham Town, west Kingston, on October 27, 2007. The police said investigations concerning the matter are incomplete.
