Seek consensus on abortion
published: Sunday | April 6, 2008

THE EDITOR, Sir:

I must congratulate you for keeping the public so well informed in all the relevant areas at all times over the years. Through this medium, I am taking the opportunity to congratulate Dr Wayne West for his letter to the editor published on Thursday, March 27, 2008, under the heading "Abortion: Find a Better Way".

I think everyone who can, should read this letter. Dr West has reminded his audience through historical facts and data about the unfortunate things that have happened to humanity all because of the selfish views of a minority of people in most instances. In this case, the foetus which is so innocent, is the aim of the 'destructionists'.

My personal view on abortion is fairly rational, I hope. If a woman is raped, sometimes this act is done by some weird anti-social type of male predator, in which case, abortion should be allowed by law. It is my view also that if a panel of medical experts arrives at the conclusion that the only way to save a mother's life is to abort a foetus, then I think this should be allowed legally.

Consensus

I think the Church, the Government, Opposition and civic bodies should sit down at some forum and discuss the issue rationally and objectively to arrive at a consensus, then the law be amended accordingly to deal with the matter so that it can reflect the reality of the times in which we are now living.

I am, etc.,
