Performer of the Week - Pocket dynamo shines at Champs
published: Saturday | March 22, 2008

Jura Levy ... the Class Two girls 100m and 200m champion.

SEVERAL TOP performances were achieved at last weekend's GraceKennedy Boys' and Girls' Athletics Championships at the National Stadium.

However, at the end of the day, and after much deliberation, Vere's Jura Levy's 11.46 seconds in the girls' Class Two 100m made her The Gleaner's Top Performer of the Week.

Holmwood Technical's Salcia Slack, who won three gold and a silver on her way to break the national heptathlon record and Champs' discuss record for Class One girls, was also well in the running.

However, Levy, who blazed to an impressive 11.46 seconds and beat the previous Champs' mark of Holmwood's Nadine Palmer, who did 11.50 in 2000, got the nod.

The 18-year-old pocket dynamo was overjoyed with her performance, saying: "I am really happy because this is the first time since I have been competing at Champs that I have won the sprint double.

"I really worked hard for this accomplishment," she said. Levy's selection for the Performer of the Week was also based on the fact that her time ranked her high among the world's best juniors this year.

In the 100m, she defeated St Thomas Technical's World Junior bronze medallist Carrie Russell (11.58) and Sashane Gayle of Holmwood (11.93).

Levy also won the 200m in 24.48 seconds, beating Antonique Campbell of Herbert Morrison (24.62) and Denesha Morris (25.07).
