Portland cricketThe West Portland Under-19 20/20 cricket competition continues tomorrow with three matches.
Swift River take on Black Hill at Skibo Oval at 11:00 a.m., while West Port tackle Balcarres in the second game at 2:00 p.m.
Fourth Generation take on Spring Hill at Charles Town at 11:00 a.m.
In last week's action, West Port, Fourth Generation and Orange Bay recorded victories.
At Skibo Oval, West Port, led by a brilliant 73 from Sean Jolly, scored 140 for eight in their 20 overs.
Donald Ornsby took 3-28 bowling for Spring Hill.
In reply, Spring Hill were dismissed for 123. Javor Henry led the way for the losers with an even half-century.
Jason Walters took 4-28, Garcia Jackson 2-14 and Jolly 2-35.
Fourth Generation defeated Balcarres by 24 runs. Fourth Generation, led by 52 from Kirk Lee scored 111 all out in 20 overs. Kemar Rowe took 3-19 and Daigo Tyrell 3-26.
At their turn at bat, Balcarres were blown away for 87. Horace Gossett took 4-18.
National Junior Chess Championships
The 2008 RBTT National Junior Chess Championships begin this morning at the RBTT head office in New Kingston. Starting time is 8:30 a.m.
This year, the Jamaica Chess Federation (JCF) has invited the top-eight active juniors in Jamaica to participate under a single round-robin format.
National Master Brandon Wilson, who is currently a second-year student at the University of the West Indies, will for the fourth straight year start as favourite for the championship. His main rivals include Camperdown's Damion Davy, current champion Onaje La Mont of Glenmuir High, Stuart James of Wolmer's Boys and Campion's Zachary Ramsay.
The other three participants, Lucien Rowe, Campion's Kadeem Knight and Philip Pryce, are also significant forces to be reckoned with.
Round robin
Rounds one and two will take place today and rounds three and four tomorrow. Rounds five and six will take place on March 29 and the final round, seventh, will take place on March 30.
The winner of the championship will be eligible to represent Jamaica at regional and inter-national junior chess tournaments until 2009.
Running concurrently with the National Junior Championships will be the National Junior Girls Championship and a Junior Invitational event.
The junior girls event will see six of the top female juniors compete against each other and the junior invitational pits six of the strongest juniors who were not eligible for the main event against each other.
Each of these tournaments will be a round robin.
Hotel domino
The Housekeeping Department on Wednesday afternoon became the first team to advance to the semi-finals of the Grand Lido Braco Resort and Spa Inter-department Domino Competition, when their scheduled opponents, Accounts, failed to turn up for the match. Housekeeping can finish no worse than second in the group.
In another game, Grounds Department chalked up their second consecutive win after defeating last year's beaten semi-finalists and previously unbeaten Bars 30-17 on Tuesday.
MultiCare football, basketball
The Annual MultiCare Inter-Schools basketball and football competitions are scheduled for two days, April 9 and 10.
More than 600 students are slated to compete in both competitions which are open to students from the 31 MultiCare-assisted schools.
The zonal competitions will see the matches for the 10-12 age group taking place on the first day of the competition, while matches for the 13-15 and 16-18 age groups will be held on the second and final day.
The competitions are the fourth and fifth in the MultiCare series of annual inter-schools competitions hosted for the 2007-2008 academic year and will be held at the MultiCare Sports Complex, Breezy Castle Centre.
CTL Portmore domino
As the CTL-sponsored Portmore domino league moved into its 16th round last Sunday, joint leaders Caribbean Classic and Fort International extended their streaks with wins over Masterpiece and Lime Tree respectively. Playing at home, Caribbean Classic defeated Masterpiece 300-285 at Portmore Lane while Fort International beat Lime Tree 300-288 in an away match at Lime Tree Grove. As result, both lead the standings with 72 points from 16 matches.
Meanwhile, defending champions Hurricane rebounded from their loss to Caribbean Classic on the previous Sunday to beat the highly-fancied Eradication 300-255 in a home match at Dunbeholden.
Hurricane thus moved up to sixth place in the standings with 57 points from 16 matches.
Prozz and Cons scored a notable upset, coming from behind to beat home team Eagle View 300-292 in a countdown at Old Braeton. Despite the loss, Eagle View are joint third in the standings with Ackee Pod, both having 63 points from 16 matches, with Eradication dropping to fifth with 62 points from 16 matches.
In other matches played last Sunday, Ackee Pod beat Correctional Services 300-277, High Roller clipped Marlie Mount 300-297 in an exciting countdown, Seamaster got by Right Stuff 300-292, Village Link stopped Old Harbour United 300-280, Ken's Wildflower drubbed JUTC 300-255 and ISCF whipped New Look 300-257.
The competition takes a break tomorrow for the playing of the Colours International Pairs KO at Colours Sports Bar, Port Henderson Plaza. Entry fee is $1,000 per pair.
