SPANISH TOWN, St Catherine:

Fifteen students from Old Harbour, St Catherine, were taken into custody by the police yesterday after being cited for offences ranging from juvenile in need of care and protection to larceny.

The children, who range in age from 12 to 15 years, were picked up by the police during their zero-tolerance day operations.

Police personnel drawn from the Old Harbour Police Station went to the nearby Old Harbour High School, where searches were conducted on the bags and persons of students during which several knives were seized.

While the lawmen were conducting the searches, a student approached them and pointed out a colleague whom he alleged stole his bag containing money and books. The boy was searched and $600 was found in his shoes. He was later charged with larceny.

During a subsequent raid on a nearby game shop, 12 boys were picked up.

According to Deputy Superintendent of Police Deutress Foster-Gardner yesterday's operation would be an ongoing one targeting everyone who flouts the law.

"We in Old Harbour have seen a high level of violence where school children are concerned, and, as such, we are trying to get rid of weapons and to warn them and their parents whenever they are held."

Weapons seized

When The Gleaner news team visited the station, dozens of seized weapons including machetes, ice picks, knives and other implements were seen.

For those who were taken into custody, they were processed and awaited the arrival of their parents before any charges were laid against them.

The Gleaner was also informed yesterday that a student remained hospitalised following a fight during which he was stabbed repeatedly.
