  • Barry bonded

    SAN FRANCISCO (AP):

Home run king Barry Bonds has little chance of having his perjury case dropped. Lawyers for the baseball slugger were scheduled to ask US District Court Judge Susan Illston yesterday to dismiss an indictment charging him with perjury and obstruction of justice. The charges arose from his 2003 grand jury testimony, in which he denied knowingly using illegal performance-enhancing drugs.

Bonds argues that prosecutors unfairly asked confusing, vague and ambiguous questions during that grand jury appearance. The former San Francisco Giants star has pleaded not guilty. In court papers, he neither admits nor denies taking the drugs.

  • Burke creates upset

Fifteen-year-old Brandon Burke created a huge upset in the International Tennis Federation (ITF) El Salvador Junior Open in San Salvador, El Salvador on Tuesday by beating number one seed William Parker of the United States 6-3, 6-3.

The unseeded Burke met Parker of the Bolleterri Tennis Academy in the second round of the tournament, after defeating Enrique Juvis 6-2, 6-1 on Monday. Parker had won the previous ITF tournament held in Jalisco, Mexico and was the runner-up in the other ITF tournament that was also held in Mexico the week before.

  • Barbados Gold Cup

    BRIDGETOWN, Barbados (CMC):

Top Trinidadian racer Storm Street and a quartet of Martinique entries will lead the foreign contingent aiming to topple the locals in the rich Sandy Lane Barbados Gold Cup today. The France-bred six-year-old gelding Laurandal comes in with high credentials and heads the Martinique entries for the Bar$223,500 (US$111,750) event over 1800 metres at the Garrison Savannah race track.

The 12-horse field also includes the Andrew Nunes four-year-old gelding Apostle, the 2007 Barbados Derby winner, who steps into the biggest assignment of his career as one of the reserves after the withdrawal of immediate past Gold Cup winners Whiskey for Me and Sharp Impact.

The US-bred Storm Street is a four-year-old gelding, who has dominated racing in Trinidad and Tobago in recent months. He won the T&T Gold Cup in December but was disqualified and returned on February 9 to slam the Arima Club Cup field by 6-1/2 lengths.

  • Gillespie heading to India

    ADELAIDE, Australia (AP):

Former Australia Test bowler Jason Gillespie is retiring from Australian cricket to play in a rebel Twenty20 league in India, where he has signed a three-year contract. Gillespie, who plays for South Australia state, waited until yesterday to announce his retirement from Australian cricket during the lunch break of his domestic match against Queensland at Adelaide Oval.
