  • Rescue the School's Environment Programme

I was very surprised to learn that the grand success of the School's Environment Programme (SEP) coordinated by the Jamaica Environment Trust (JET) would soon come an end if some source of funding was not realised shortly.

The Government should intervene and rescue this programme until sufficient funding can be realised to revamp the efforts of those persons who have worked so hard to portray what they believe in. I believe it is incumbent on the minister and the Ministry of Education to make this venture a part of the transformation process.

The minister and ministry responsible for the environment can use this medium as a way of proving its commitment to the conservation and preservation of our environment. Students, teachers, communities and organisations that have benefited now is the time to assist the programme. I urge all well thinking citizens at home and abroad to join the advocacy for the continuation of this programme.

    - Keron D. Brown, Environment Club Coordinator, Moneague Primary & Junior High School

  • Re Flow negotiations

My attention has been drawn to the headline 'Flow blames woes on old equipment'. The full article appears on the front page of Section D of The Gleaner for February 27, 2008. I use this opportunity to inform readers that throughout the negotiations, apart from its 'in house' counsel, Flow was represented by a leading law firm in Canada.

'Flow' was also concurrently represented by a leading law firm in Jamaica.

I was the sole attorney acting for Jamaica Amalgamated Cable Systems Limited.

In the circumstances, any payment due from 'Flow' will be vigorously pursued.

  • Decriminalise ganja

Ganja has been decriminalised in Switzerland. Ganja is a product used not only for smoking, but is a big industry for cosmetics, fabrics; and I think Jamaica should start industries in many other areas. Jamaica cannot rely on tourism only (the country has become too expensive, if you only produce half of a supermarket, you could employ a lot of people. A government should be there for the welfare of people; but it looks like the hard working people (worldwide) are forced to support the governments; and this has to stop.
