The case for term limits
published: Saturday | March 1, 2008

THE EDITOR, Sir:

One of the campaign promises made by the current Prime Minister of Jamaica was the changing of our constitution to allow for fixed term limits for Governments.

As investigations are done and in one very topical case, charges are laid, the need to move with much alacrity on the matter becomes even more compelling. In most private and some public sector companies, the taking of at least two consecutive weeks leave annually is mandatory. This allows, among other things, for the prevention of monopolisation of a function by any one person and gives rise to transparency in the operation of the said function.

Political processes

I firmly believe that as a developing country we have been somewhat backward with some of our political processes, especially as they relate to the selection of our representatives. The majority of us go the route of party politics over the national good. As a result, our politicians, on both sides, over the years have become very complacent and we continue to select/elect them.

While some persons are labelling the recent revelations as witch-hunting, we need to ensure that the message that is effectively communicated is one that appeals to every public official - the need for transparency in their operations. There must be one, and only one, standard way of dealing with wrongdoings no matter the status of the person committing the wrongs.

I am, etc.,

PAT BIGNALL
