The Editor, Sir:
With reference to the on-going violence in schools and, more recently, the attack on the teachers at the Ocho Rios High School and Garlogie Primary and Junior High in Manchester, it saddens me to see the breakdown of discipline across the board in Jamaica today.
When children can be taking matters into their own hands and showing total disrespect for those in authority and parents uphold that sort of behaviour, then I know we have sunk to the lowest point in life.
The authorities are allowing the perpetrators to get away with these unlawful acts, which is why there is a proliferation of them. These lawbreakers need to feel the full extent of the law, to send a clear message to those who even think of breaking the law that that type of behaviour will not be tolerated.
Judiciary system needs revision
The judiciary system needs to be revised because it is not doing a good job at protecting the innocent. Criminality is the order of the day and anarchy reigns.
This disregard for others and flouting of the law has gone on for too long and I hope this government will now put some teeth into the law and clean up the mess.
I am happy to see that something is now being done with the arrest of persons involved in the attack at Gargolie Primary in Manchester..
I support the teachers who walked off their job at Ocho Rios High because drastic actions have to be taken to jolt people from their complacency.
I am, etc.,
