LAMEY
The noose was cut at Lynch Park in Buff Bay, Portland, by a 68th-minute strike from Kevin Lamey, which gave Waterhouse a 1-0 victory over home team St. Georges in the Cash Plus Premier League game yesterday.
Waterhouse, which continue to cut into the overall lead and join Tivoli atop the second round standings on 19 points, dominated action from the early whistle.
St. Georges, which remained fifth with 26 points, clearly missed the services of four key players, including prolific scorer Damian 'Boy Boy' Harwood and Omar Brissett, due to an incident at the end of their previous match which resulted in all four being red-carded after the final whistle.
Waterhouse, now a closer third on 35 points, one adrift of Harbour View and two behind leaders Tivoli, took advantage of the weakened Georges team and launched a series of attacks in the first half through Lamey, Damion Williams and Garfield Reid. They were, however, denied an opening goal by Georges custodian Anthoniel Williams, who made some outstanding saves.
Georges belatedly came into their own and started to counter-attack through Omar Henderson, Danian Reid, Donovan Davis and Denroy Dennis. They should have got a penalty when a Waterhouse defender handled the ball in front of the referee - inside the 18-yard box, but no whistle was blown.
Reduced to 10 men
Waterhouse were later reduced to 10 men in the 42nd minute following the ejection of Michael Stone.
In the second half, Waterhouse came out running at Georges but again top-level goalkeeping denied the likes of Lamey, Reid, Williams and Jomo Gordon. The deadlock was finally broken in the 68th minute after a cross from substitute Irvino English found Lamey, who got by four defenders and fired into goal.
Losing coach Donovan Duckie felt the decision not to award them a penalty could have been decisive.
"Had we got that penalty call in the first half, things might have ended up differently," he said. "Our next game is against Boys' Town and we will be seeking to get back to winning ways."
Waterhouse coach Wayne Fairclough praised his team for securing three points, especially against a team like Georges which has been doing well at home.
"Waterhouse are on the improve," he added. "Expectations are high in the camp and the entire Waterhouse community has thrown support behind the team. Through football we are able to restore peace throughout the various communities."
