The Editor, Sir:
In relation to the story about the policeman giving false witness, I am of the opinion that the Commissioner of Police should have given the situation more thought before he suspended the police officer.
Yes, the policeman was dis-honest; however, his honesty in confessing his wrong should be seen as a plus for the police force, and this should also serve as a wake-up call for members of the force who may have been, or is indulging in this practice.
In my opinion, he should have been severely reprimanded and demoted, but be allowed to continue to serve for having realised that he was doing wrong and had come clean; not everyone would have been that honest.
The commissioner's swift action is only going to cause others who may have wanted to come clean to go underground and continue to hide their wrongdoings. There must be justice with mercy. In my opinion, Constable Lyn-Sue should be reinstated and be an example for others to follow. Putting Constable Lyn-Sue now to suffer will not help the cause; we need more policemen like him, to stand up and be counted among the brave and honest, only then will we have a better police force.
There must be justice, but justice without mercy and compassion causes stagnation.
I am, etc.,
