The Editor, Sir:I think the time is opportune for the country to simply begin the process of the enforcement of our laws. This simple act will go a long way in restoration of discipline, respect for self and respect for others. It is not that the country lacks laws and resources. It is the failure to enforce the laws that is the problem.
We can begin the process by simple acts like the enforcement of the rules of the road. So taxi-cabs, bus drivers and other motorists who believe they are the only ones entitled to the use of our roads must adhere to the rules.
The constant use of the term 'just hustling' as an excuse for indiscipline and the breaking of rules must come to an end. Motorists must know that if the rules are broken there are consequences to be faced and you cannot 'give man money' and get off.
Let us remove the children who are selling and begging at stop lights and send them to school.
Let us say to the police officer who puts on his siren to beat traffic under the guise that duty calls, that this is a misuse of privileges.
Let us enforce the Noise Abatement Act. A society without structure and order will certainly deteriorate into a society of lawlessness and disorder.
Old-fashioned courtesies
And wouldn't it be simply wonderful if we could start by extending old-fashioned courtesies to others by just saying good morning to others; to the youth from the ghetto, to the child going to school and to our elderly.
Let us begin to demonstrate that we are capable of civilised behaviours not a continuance of this constant display of ignorance. Those of us who know better must begin by being examples to others. Let us begin to demonstrate that we have now started a society where discipline is in and indiscipline is out. Let's start a society that depicts a proud nation, not a nation that boasts the murder of children and our elders.
I am, etc.,
