Final postponed in honour of McKenley

AS A mark of respect for sports hero the Honourable Herbert McKenley, O.M., who died last week, the daCosta Cup final between Garvey Maceo and Glenmuir has been postponed.

The final was scheduled for Saturday, the same day as the official funeral service for McKenley. The final will now be played on Wednesday, December 12, at a venue to be announced.

As a consequence of the postponement, this year's Olivier Shield, competed for by the leading rural team and the top Corporate Area team, will be played in just one leg on Saturday, December 15, also at venue also to be announced.

Meanwhile, planning for McKenley's funeral is in the final stages with a dress rehearsal scheduled for today.

Also today, Olivia 'Babsy' Grange, the Minister of Information, Culture, Youth and Sports, will give a press briefing at which she will update the media and outline what is expected of those covering the funeral.Today also marks the start of a three-day official period of mourning for McKenley and the opening of condolence books for two days.

Condolence books

The books are at the headquarters of the Jamaica Amateur Athletics Association, the Institute of Sports, National Arena in Kingston; the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade in New Kingston; the Western Regional Office of the Prime Minister in Montego Bay; Calabar High School on Red Hills Road in St. Andrew and the Jamaica Labour Party Headquarters at Belmont Road in St. Andrew.

Signing will be between the hours of 9:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. each day.

Already condolence books have been opened at Jamaica's 18 foreign missions around the world. A wake for McKenley will take place at the National Arena tomorrow night.
