THE EDITOR, Sir:
ONE OF my strong beliefs is that the effectiveness of any organisation will depend on its management, leadership and also its staff. One issue that has always faced public sector entities is public view of their inefficiencies, and their inability to provide quality, consistent service.
The National Solid Waste Management Authority (NSWMA) is no different.
While I agree with the new executive director's decision to run a highly-efficient organisation, centred on quality performance by its staff, I am somewhat concerned, to say the least, about her statement published in The Gleaner of December 5.
"Inasmuch as we are out there removing garbage from the streets, we have to remove our own garbage. We have to clean up,' Gordon-Webley told The Gleaner yesterday."
I have to ask, was that analogy necessary?
Does this imply that she is referring to the unfortunate employees who have lost their jobs as 'garbage'? I really hope not. Managers have to be sensitive of issues that involve employees and the organisation. Let's remember who represents the greatest asset in an organisation. Let us work towards developing our human capital.
I am, etc.,
G.P.
