'Nyam Jamaica' is here at last
published: Thursday | December 6, 2007

Rosemary Parkinson, Gleaner Writer

Sonya Dunstan and her Jamaican products. - photos by Rosemary Parkinson

One or two or three horrific glitches later, my book, Nyam Jamaica is on its way back from whence it started so many years ago. Copies will grace our shores before Christmas, that is, God willing, and if those whose job it is to 'clear the goods' help me out a little here. I have gone through many challenges to bring Nyam Jamaica to fruition.

Suffice it to say, I was beginning to despair and I never thought the day would come when I would hold it in my hands - I received a copy direct from the printers and tears flowed. To the many sponsors who have waited so patiently, you will not be disappointed. To those whose stories are in the book, as I travel from parish to parish, you will finally get to read all about it. But I would like to thank everyone who had even the slightest bit to do with getting Nyam Jamaica finished.

Acknowledgements

There are, of course, many to thank individually but I wish to do that once the book is in their hands, so please forgive that I do not mention you right here and now. Those who gave of their valuable time, photography and their love know who they are and our cellphones have been abuzz with the news since the book was carefully unpacked here in Barbados where I am involved in some consultancy work and the renovation of a very, very typically Barbadian restaurant called Cou Cou Stick at Pelican Village near the port and the capital, Bridgetown.

Nyam Jamaica would not have been, had it not been for Jamaica. And, I am eternally grateful. This book is a reflection of the Jamaica that I have grown to call home and love; its people whose warmth and exceptional friendliness have enveloped me for so many years. All I can do this week is to leave you with some tiny peeks of photography that are but a mere touch of the bounty within this huge, colourful book that weighs in at 2.8 kilos!

Keep reading Food!

Have fun with Jamaican characters.
