Waterford High ease into semis
published: Saturday | November 17, 2007

Kwesi Mugisa, Staff Reporter

Waterford High eased their way into the semi-finals of the ISSA/Pepsi/Digicel Manning Cup following a 3-1 win over Camperdown at Jamaica College (JC), finishing at the top of Group Two yesterday.

The win was the third in a row for the Portmore team who moved to an unassailable nine points, leaving Eltham and Excelsior, who face off at JC tomorrow, to battle for second-place honours.

A win for either of those teams could see them slip through the back door for a spot in the competition's final four as the best second-place team.

Epic clash

However, the best second-place team could also come from Group One, which will see favourites Jamaica College and Bridgeport in an epic clash at the Spanish Town Prison Oval today, starting at 3:00 p.m. It is the first of a double-header that will be opened by Norman Manley and Kingston College (KC) at 1:00 p.m.

For today's feature, a draw will be good enough for Bridgeport who are already on six points, but JC will have to win outright to save their season.

Over in Group Three, a win or a draw for KC will see them safely through to the semi-finals, while Norman Manely will have to win in order to advance.

Perfect start

In yesterday's action, the crafty Conrad White scored the first of his two goals in the sixth minute to give Waterford the perfect start, then added a second at the 26th (penalty).

Waterford top striker Mark Walters came off the bench to supply a cool finish in the 83rd minute to put the St. Catherine team three ahead.

However, Camperdown's Ramone White pulled a goal back to salvage something for the home team two minutes later.

In the day's other game, an already eliminated STATHS beat Wolmer's 1-0 in a lacklustre affair. Adrian Weir netted a header in the seventh minute for the Bumper Hall team.
