New focus by Minister Smith
published: Saturday | November 17, 2007

The Editor, Sir:

I am writing in reference to a news report in which the present Minister of National Security is quoted as saying that he is going to spend additional funds on crime fighting especially in the provision of more equipment for the police, guns, etc.

Let me tell you, Mr. Minister, this will have no effect. If you are serious about crime-fighting you will have to recruit more police officers from outside of Jamaica, other Caribbean islands etc.

Give information

Put at least one in each police station especially in the crime-infested areas so that the citizens, with confidence, can give information on criminal activities.

To give information to Jamaican police officers is tantamount to putting a noose around your neck or, in the hypothetical case, that of rat inviting a cat to be his house guest for the weekend. We do not intend to commit mass suicide.

In all honesty, Minister, whom do you think we should fear more in present day Jamaica?

I am, etc.,

P. LOGAN

Duncans P.O., Trelawny
