Restoration plans under way for Ward Theatre
published: Saturday | November 17, 2007

Significant plans are in the making to restore the Ward Theatre, which is regarded as one of Jamaica's most important cultural landmarks. This initiative will commence with a major fund-raising event in the form of a 'Mediathon' on December 9 to raise more than J$10 million towards the restoration of the theatre.

The 96-year-old structure, which is located in the centre of the Parade in downtown Kingston, has been a significant part of the country's cultural legacy. At present, the theatre sits in disrepair, more so since the onslaught of Hurricane Dean in August, which forced its closure.

According to Dr. Ruby Martin, chairman of the Ward Theatre Foundation (WTF), the structure is in a critical condition and is in great need of renovation. During Hurricane Dean the theatre's roofing, seats, stage and flooring were damaged. Dr. Martin estimates that total renovation of the structure will amount to some US$20 million (J$1.4 billion).

In 2003, Cabinet had approved some $4 million towards the upkeep of the theatre, but, at present no such funding exists.

"In other countries, the private sector in partnership with the Government often come together in a united relationship to restore, protect and preserve structures that mirror a reflection of their heritage," Dr. Martin noted. "The WTF therefore pleads with all concerned, including our citizens, to step up to the plate and do their part to make this a reality," added Dr. Martin.

Call in and contribute

On December 9, Jamaicans will be urged to call in during the mediathon and make their donations towards the refurbishing of the theatre.

Some 11 media houses have also joined forces to make the mediathon possible.

The event is being coordinated by the Creative Production and Training Centre, under the theme, 'The Ward - Restoring the Glory'. It is hoped that enough funds will be raised to re-roof the theatre, reconstruct the stage and refurbish lighting, and other fixtures and fittings.
