The Editor, Sir:With the upcoming local government election on the horizon, I wish to suggest to the powers that be an obvious means of getting more money into the coffers.
First, I would suggest an increase in property taxes. Any sum under $1,000 is ridiculous at the present time.
Second, the fine for late payment is laughable and absolutely no deterrent what-soever. I recently paid $40 per for each outstanding year, peanuts.
Third, everyone liable for property taxes, should be sent a reminder in January of each year. At present, this is done in a ad hoc manner.
And finally, a concerted effort should be made to collect taxes from errant land owners. Particularly absentee owners, living abroad who do not look after their properties which are often overgrown, unkempt, unsightly and provide hiding places for lurking criminals. This is a constant worry to local residents.
Extra revenue
If left unattended and untaxed for say, 10 years, it should be made possible for such properties to be confiscated by the local authority and auctioned off in order to recoup the years of unpaid taxes, bushing and maintenance where this was carried out.
The extra revenue generated, could help to galvanise plans for local regeneration of our towns, roads and drainage systems. For example, Morant Bay, my local town centre is crying out for a makeover. It's a pretty town but in its present state, it's a disgrace and not at all user-friendly for the elderly, disabled or for anyone for that matter. We need improved parking facilities, public conveniences, proper drainage and our park back to its former glory. And what of our historic burnt-out courthouse building? That could become a museum for the parish, we have enough historical data to fill it.
These are not vote-catching suggestions, however, they are feasible and if people could see the benefits, then the votes would follow, surely?
I am, etc.,
