An unlikely goal, which flew into the back of the net straight from a corner kick from Boys' Town's Fabian Watkins, forced hosts Waterhouse to settle for a share of the points in a 1-1 draw in the Cash Plus Premier League (CPPL) at Waterhouse Mini Stadium yesterday.
Following an even first half which saw the ground bombarded with heavy rain and howling wins, the Red Brigade saw their resilient defensive barricade broken when Weston Forrest slipped the ball into the back of the net from a skirmish in front of goal, just second's after the second half got under way.
After seeing several previous opportunities from Forrest, one cleared off the line in the 25th minute and then a point-blank header at the far post put wide of goal 10 minutes later, the Drewsland faithful breathed a sigh of relief.
Close call
However, 11 minutes from half time, Watkins' right-sided corner curled over the head of Waterhouse goalkeeper Richard McCallum at the near post and nestled into the far post.
Making his seasonal debut, Waterhouse ace striker Kevin Lamey also had his opportunity to restore full points to the Drewsland team. However, Lamey, usually reliable in front of goal, saw his 83rd-minute header drift wide of goal and then having been gifted a second opportunity by a spill from Boys' Town custodian Philmore Crumbie, saw his initial shot taken off the line by a defender and fired wide again on the follow-up attempt.
"Days like today make my job unhappy. They looked good in front of goal all week but today I don't know what happened, we missed at least five opportunities," said Waterhouse coach Danilo Barigga.
Peruvian disappointed
"I'm only human, I guess we have to work on it, but I'm disappointed that we are just missing a lot," the Peruvian added.
Boys' Town coach Andrew Price was pleased with his team's effort in the second half.
"We played a lot better in the second half, we had a lot of territorial advantage, this was a very good Waterhouse team and I think we ran them into the ground in the second half," he said.
"We would have loved to have taken all three points for second position but a point away from home is always good," he added.
Boys' Town remain in fourth place on 10 points, while Waterhouse moved into sixth place on nine.
