Santos turn back Cavalier
published: Monday | November 12, 2007

Robert Bailey, Freelance Writer

Former National Premier League champions Santos, led by a brace from Fabian Nethersole, recorded their first victory in the Victoria Mutual Building Society (VMBS) Kingston and St. Andrew Football Association (KSAFA) Super League, beating Cavalier 3-1 on Saturday at Barbican.

In the day's other games, Bull Bay defeated Duhaney Park 2-1, Meadhaven United stopped Constant Spring 1-0, Jamaica Defence Force (JDF) and Maverley Hughenden played to a 0-0 draw and it also ended goalless between Rockfort and Elleston Flats.

In Major League action, Rae Town whipped Greenwich Town 6-0, Swallowfield beat Liguanea United 3-1, Central Kingston stopped University of Technology (UTech) 2-0, and Olympic Gardens edged Seaview Gardens 1-0.

Carlton 'Spanner' Dennis, coach of Santos, was pleased with his team's victory.

"I am satisfied with my team's victory because I think we played according to our instructions," said Dennis. "However, we gave up a goal in the first half but equalised and we also missed a penalty. But in the second half we scored goals so I am pretty satisfied with the performance."

Fitness

Dennis added: "I think we need to work on our fitness and also our tactical awareness, but the season is still very early and I think as it goes on we will get better."

At Up Park Camp, the JDF domi-nate the first period but were let down by poor finishing from Cecil Sturridge, Garvey Simms and Kevin Michelle.

George Crooks got the best chance for Maverley-Hughenden on the stroke of half-time, but his close range header was well saved by national goalkeeper Allien Whittaker.
