Gov't not tough enough on crime
published: Monday | November 12, 2007

The Editor, Sir:

Déjà vu all over again. Once again the country has been experiencing some of the most horrible crimes created by man, and nothing has been done to at least reduce, much more rid our society of this awful scourge.

What makes it so horrible and painful is how unresponsive and passive the current government is regarding this matter. As a Jamaican, who has lived in the United States for over 35 years, I can assure the Jamaican Government that it was only one time that I can recall that the United States Government had to enforce its laws re crime, and that was during the 1990s when they implemented a three-strike-out policy which was a success.

Such a policy gave criminals three options to turn in their guns or face mandatory imprisonment. Instead of running to England, and wasting taxpayers' money on these racists why not emulate some of the crime-fighting strategies implemented by the United States and which have helped in reducing their crime rate.

Finally, I do not think this present government is tough enough on crime, and may very well become the shortest-elected government in our era.

I am, etc.,
