Theft probe going 'well'
published: Monday | November 12, 2007

Police interviews of over 70 employees at the Financial Investigation Division (FID), where approximately $17 million in cash was stolen from a vault, are expected to be completed this week.

Head of the Major Investigation Task Force (MIT), Assistant Commissioner of Police Les Green, told The Gleaner yesterday that investigations are progressing "quite well". He said the police were hoping to find further leads at the end of the interviews.

The MIT was called in three weeks ago by the Ministry of Finance after it was discovered that money kept by the FID for evidence had gone missing.

While acknowledging that some of the cash stolen was that retrieved from imprisoned Matthews Lane strongman, Donald 'Zekes' Phipps, ACP Green said "it was not all his".

The remaining money being kept for evidence has been ordered stored at the Bank of Jamaica in downtown Kingston.
