Spotlight on Waterhouse-Boys' Town match-up
published: Sunday | November 11, 2007

Nodley Wright, Freelance Writer

WITH THE top three teams out of action today due to the Caribbean Club Championships, the spotlight should fall on the clash between former giants Boys' Town and last season's runners-up Waterhouse.

Only four matches will be played today due to the absence of the already mentioned trio and August Town.

In the match of the day, Waterhouse should just about get the better of Boys' Town when they meet at Drewsland.

In Jomo Gordon and Brian Wollaston they have two of the better forwards in the competition. Despite that though club executive Felix Porter has always maintained that the strength of the team is in midfield.

Jonothan Williams has long proven himself, but the man of the moment for the club is Damion Williams who caused numerous problems for Portmore United when those teams met earlier in the season.

If the Williamses fail to fire, Waterhouse could always count on Weston Forrest, Vincent Earle and the dreadlocked Ramon Bailey, who is on the hunt for his first national call up.

No pushovers

Boys' Town, while not having as many 'named' players in their ranks, will be no pushovers. As coach Andrew Price indicated at the start of the season, this, their third one back in the top flight, will see them mounting a serious challenge for the title.

Veteran goalscorer Oneil McDonald has come in to add much-needed firepower and has already made his presence felt with a hat-trick. Fabian Watkins has been his usual steady self and along with Michael Campbell and Oneil Crumbie should put up a decent challenge. George Vernal, their best player last season, should also be a handful.

The challenge for Boys' Town today is to outscore Waterhouse. What they have shown this season is their ability to score but defensively they have not been as sound. If they can reorganise that part of their game and goalkeeper Richard McCallum shows up in his best form, Waterhouse could be in for a tough evening.

At Tony Spaulding Sports Complex, despite Village's record against Arnett Gardens over the years, their misery is expected to continue.

Village will need more than Fabian Dawkins to inspire them to victory over an Arnett Gardens team still smarting from their loss to St. Georges two Sundays ago.

They should have also benefited from the break provided by the suspension of the competition to get some injuries healed and to improve on the fitness of players like Marcelino Blackburn, who returned late from the United States.

Leon Irving has shown flashes of quality he displayed two seasons ago and if there is anyone who can whip him back into shape it is new coach Fitzroy 'Johnny' Reid.

Based on the form they are showing now, it does not appear that Reno can beat anyone, but if they are to do anything in the league, today's match against St. Georges at STETHS is one in which they will have to make their mark.

A win for St. Georges would give them even more reason to believe that they can compete with the big boys.

The Sporting Central/Tivoli Gardens game could go either way, but based on Tivoli Gardens' experience, they should be given the edge. However, if Sporting Central win it would not be a surprise.
