JAMAICA'S TINESTA Rowe, a junior at Fresno State University, has been named the Western Athletic Conference's Women's Tennis Player of the Month after a string of outstanding perfor-mances in October.

Rowe, the lanky 21-year-old from Runaway Bay, was in peak form at the Intercollegiate Tennis Asso-ciation's (ITA) Northwest Regional Championships held at the University of Stanford last month.

Rowe and partner Melanie Gloria captured the women's double title with five straight victories. Played in a single-set format, they recorded impressive margins of 8-1, 8-2, 8-2, 8-2 and 8-6 on their way to the crown.

The Jamaican also made an impressive run in the singles at Stanford where she advanced all the way to the quarter-finals in a field full of nationally-ranked opponents.

Rowe posted a 4-1 record and her scalps included number nine-ranked Celia Durkin of the host university.

Stellar run

Rowe and Canadian Gloria, who are the number 11-ranked team NCAA Division One women's tennis, also had a stellar run at the recent ITA National Indoor Championships where they reached the quarter-finals.

Earlier in the season, at the All American Championship in Los Angeles - which features the top 128 collegiate players in the U.S. - the Bulldog duo stunned the numberr six- ranked team from Auburn, as well as the pairs from highly-regarded Notre Dame (nine) and Duke (22).

Rowe's overall record for the season stands at 9-3 in singles and 13-5 in doubles.

In July, Rowe won the singles and doubles titles at the Argus Open Invitational tournament in Bermuda.
