Homo text in schools
published: Thursday | November 1, 2007

The Editor, Sir:

I noted in yesterday's edition, the brewing issue of homosexuality being taught in schools, in a way I find to be covert and wrong.

As a father to a young family, I want to state my total opposition to such practices, as it appears to be a clear attempt, by a minority of persons in this country, to normalise and legalise homosexual practices in Jamaica; a moral precipice.

It is obvious that the orchestrators - the Ministry of Education included - of this material are behaving proactive to an agenda that is known to be intolerable in our society. I am certain that the targeting of our young students reflects a sinister strategy to influence acceptability of homosexual practices and structures for the future.

Don't attempt legalisation

If our assumption that democracy reflects the views/wishes of the majority in society, then the Ministry of Education and the Bruce Golding-led Government must not dare to attempt this path of legalising homosexuality.

Now that the Jamaica Labour Party (JLP) has become Government, I would want to suggest that the JLP recognise that any such attempt would be counter to the wishes of the people of this country and could be met with extremely strong resistance.

Andrew Holness, the Minister of Education, needs to, therefore, immediately remove all such textbook materials which are currently in or intended for the classrooms of our children.

Mr. Holness would be well advised to take an opinion poll from his West Central St. Andrew constituency if he needs any form of "soundings" on the matter.

I am, etc.,

K. JOHNSON
