Case of the caring corporal
published: Saturday | October 20, 2007

The Editor, Sir:

I am writing this to commend Corporal Evans Williams of the Constant Spring Police Station. His good-natured attitude towards the residents of North Central St. Andrew cannot go unnoticed. He always talks with and encourages the youngsters, and there is not a single person in the community that talks ill about him.

Recently, in early October, he sent a man's son to call him. The man initially thought that it was something that either he or his 13-year-old son was accused of doing. He reluctantly went, but was instead questioned by Corp. Williams about why his son was not in school. The man told him that it is not every day that he can send all his kids to school, as he was under a lot of pressure.

Lunch money

Mr. Williams gave the man $1,500, and told him to ensure that all his kids, especially the 13-year-old boy who is very vulnerable, go to school everyday. He further gave the man his phone number, and told him to contact him any time he had any difficulties in this regard.

Maybe to some, this might sound trivial, but the implication of this gesture was really something to me, and maybe, just maybe, it will eventually save this boy from a very possible life of crime.

Big up, Big Willy, and continue to have that caring heart of yours.

I am, etc.,
