THE EDITOR, Sir:As a senior citizen now, I have two points to make.
1. We seem to be ignoring the effects of global warming and the possibility that the waterfront, as we know it, might disappear. Whether or not this happens, perhaps this is too much of an exposed site for such a secure sensitive activity.
2. Why are we so quick to discard well thought-out projects. National Heroes Park was to become, if my memory serves me right, the heart of government, starting the Parliament with its two houses. The national archives, the National Gallery, the National Library, etc., and an avenue of heroes, mausoleums flanking this beautifully landscaped park, would be the ministries, some of which are already in place - Finance, Education, Labour, etc.
Benefits of sticking to our original plan include: We already own that land; some ministeries are already in place; the avenue of heroes is already partially installed; it is sufficiently elevated that even if gobal warming hits, it would be safe; it bridges uptown and downtown ... would stimulate the development of the area and stop the deterioration of the area.
The original House can continue to be used until the new one is completed after which it can probably house a new government department or ministry or museum.
I am, etc.,
