The Editor, Sir:
I read the story headlined, 'Lewin for JCF'. This I find very revealing about the manner in which appointments are done in the force.
We have a country to operate as a crime-free or a very reduced figure in the crime rate. We all know how we Jamaicans operate when we know someone in a position to assist us in our endeavours. We must desist from these practices when we know our means of favour have consequences in the law. We are civilised people who know the boundaries of the law. Then, why can't we acknowledge that and live within its barriers? When we live abroad we behave and back home we are reckless.
On the appointment of the 'commish' through the ranks, I say no way. Give an outsider the baton to make the changes and carry out the discipline needed. If the people we entrust to carry out the law keep behaving as untouchables how then will we have a stable crime rate and a safer Jamaica for the people we love so dearly and the visitors who tread our soil?
I am, etc.,
