'Jacket' solution
published: Tuesday | October 16, 2007

The Editor, Sir:

The 'jacket' phenomenon is making women in Jamaica look like the villain and men the poor innocent victim.

If the man had been wearing a foot of socks, the 'problem child' might not have happened. It still would not erase the fact that an encounter occurred.

The bad name given to men and women, more particularly to women in the West, has been earned by a culture of promiscuity. We've been reared in this environment which promotes it. Under the Talibans, both the man and the woman would be put to death. By the grace and mercy of God we're Jamaicans.

A woman who has doubts about the paternity of her embryo also has a strong reason to seek an abortion. This would spare everyone a lot of heartache, and no one would have to support a child who isn't his. Abortion in this case would be justified because it is a life-or-death situation.

Since we cannot correct our ways, this is the simplest solution for prevention of a 'jacket'.

I am, etc.,
