Make an Outstanding bet in Bucknor Memorial
published: Saturday | October 6, 2007

PRINCESS SHEILA (Andrew Thomas) leads home rivals to win the seventh race for native-bred four-year-olds and up (non-winners of three) over the straight five course at Caymanas Park on Wednesday. The four-year-old bay filly won at odds of 3-1.

TEN horses are down to contest the G.A. 'Sarge' Bucknor Memorial Cup straight five feature at Caymanas Park today, among them the unbeaten three-year-old filly OUTSTANDING, who bids for win number five.

Trained by the legendary 'Hall of Famer' Allan 'Billy' Williams for Roylton D'Cambre, OUTSTANDING will, more than likely, start favourite despite the presence of the proven course specialists DOUBLE BOW, DIESEL and BULLET TRAIN, not to mention the very fit TOOT DI HOOT and DANCING SAM.

She faces what amounts to her stiffest task to date, but is such a talented filly that she should rise to the occasion.

The winner is almost sure to come from the above-mentioned group, but with the Wayne DaCosta-trained BULLET TRAIN worst drawn on the far rails, the trio of OUTSTANDING, DOUBLE BOW and TOOT DI HOOT are the real standouts.

TOOT DI HOOT had DOUBLE BOW behind in third when finishing a close second to ASKAWOMAN over the round five course on September 15 and this three-year-old colt from the stables of Patrick Lynch is much sharper for today's encounter.

That was in fact his first outing since June and the Outrigger-Tooting offspring showed marked improvement under the care of his new trainer. With in-form apprentice Jason Simpson replacing the sparingly used Blandford Stewart aboard TOOT DI HOOT today, the fleet-footed colt is sure to make a brave bid with only 50.0kg.

Still, the question is whether TOOT DI HOOT can confirm his superiority over the Donovan Bruce-trained DOUBLE BOW now venturing over the straight. When they met recently, DOUBLE DOW was not too alert at the start yet finished only a length behind TOOT DI HOOT in third.

DOUBLE BOW will also be better for that pipe-opener and back in action over his pet trip from the convenient mark of 52.0kg and smart apprentice Andre Martin aboard, is confidently expected to fight out the finish.

OUTSTANDING, however, is a talented filly and looks the type to follow until her colours have been lowered. The speedy daughter of Law Of The Sea-Tropical Magic continues to move sweetly at exercise following her narrow victory over fellow three-year-old NATURALLY ROYAL at 1200 metres on August 6.

Last Tuesday morning she galloped from the gates in 59.2 (in the visor) with leading jockey Trevor Simpson up, the first four in a brisk 46.2.

Having secured a favourable draw on the outside, OUTSTANDING, with the visor now fitted and Simpson again at the helm, will not be easily denied with only 52.0kg.

Other firm fancies on the 11-race programme are the down-in-class MAMBO, a recent winner, to follow up in the Monica Todd Memorial Cup in the seventh, CAPTAIN BONE in the sixth, ISLA in the ninth and SHAHID in the 11th.
