'St Bess' make winning start

As expected, Super Cup champions St. Elizabeth made a winning start to the 2007 Jamaica Cricket Association (JCA) all-island limited overs competition by beating Portland by 72 runs at Alpart yesterday.

Sent to bat, St. Elizabeth were dismissed for 201 in 46 overs. Davian Davidson led the way with 65 against Craston Carr (5-30).

In reply, Portland were blown away for 129. Christopher Dwyer was the top wicket-taker for St. Elizabeth with 3-17.

Elsewhere, Llewellyn Meggs scored a century in Melbourne's 49-run win over St. Catherine CA while Manchester defeated defending champions Kensington by 34 runs.

Police, Jamaica Defence Force and St. Catherine CC also recorded first round victories.

At Melbourne Oval: Meggs scored 113 not out, hitting nine fours and five sixes off 98 balls to help Melbourne to 279 for seven.

At their turn at bat, St. Catherine CA were bowled out for 230 in 44.2 overs. Colin Buchanan top-scored with 51.

At Up Park Camp: Replying to JDF's 235-9; Hanover were blown away for 162 in 41.5 overs.

At Kensington: Manchester first made 155 in 46.1 overs and then dismissed Kensington for 121. Domain Sangster took 5-21 for Manchester.

At Elletson Road: Police, with half centuries from Kemar Anderson, 62, Demetrius Francis, 60, Odean Wickham, 51, and Renford Bodie, 50, scored 417-9 against Boys' Town, who were dismissed for 94.

At Chedwin Park: Trelawny scored 120 in 38 overs to which St. Catherine CC replied with 125-5.
