Leeds, Knoxwood vie for St Elizabeth title
published: Sunday | July 29, 2007

Michael McLean, Freelance Writer

Mid-season champion Knoxwood FC is on the brink of clinching their first major football title when they take on Leeds United in the 2006-2007 St. Elizabeth Co-op Credit Union Division One second leg final at Appleton Estate today at 3:30 p.m.

The final was scheduled to be played at the same venue last Sunday, but was postponed at the last minute.

The clash will be a repeat of the end-of-first-round final that Knoxwood won 1-0 over a month ago.

Knoxwood are entering the second leg with a 2-1 cushion from the first game.

Both teams advanced to the final following contrasting victories in the semi-finals.

Knoxwood came from behind to beat Braes River 3-0 after they were beaten 3-2 in the first leg to advance 5-3 on aggregate, while Leeds, who drew 0-0 with Parottee in the first leg, won 2-0 on aggregate.

In the run up to the semis both teams were unbeaten. After 17 games, Knoxwood registered 14 wins and 3 draws.

They scored a record 54 goals with 17 against to finish with 45 points, while the Dennis "Bigga" Ellison-coached Leeds United won 12 games from 18 matches. They drew 4 games, lost two and scored 33 goals and gave up 23 to finish on 40 points.

The champion and runner-up will be promoted to the Major League next season.
