RETHYMNO, Greece (CMC):

JAMAICAN USAIN Bolt advertised impressive speed as he ran a personal best 10.03 seconds to win the men's 100 metres at the Vardinoyannia 2007 international track and field meeting on Wednesday night.

Bolt, a 200-metre specialist, topped the American pair of Leroy Dixon and WallaceSpearmon in the short sprint and was the only Caribbean winner at the meet.

Encouraging

The win was very encouraging for the 20-year-old Bolt as he targets the IAAF World Championship next month in Japan.

Just over three weeks after clocking a sizzling Caribbean record 19.75 seconds for 200m at the Jamaica National Championships, Bolt dominated the short sprint and edged Dixon (10.07) in the finish. Spearmon clocked 10.20 for third.

American J.J. Johnson won the B Race in 10.10 seconds, chased by Trinidad and Tobago's Marc Burns and Jamaican Chris Williams, who were both timed at 10.22. Burns snatched second in the photo finish.

Spearmon collected a predictable win in the men's 200m in 20.24 seconds with Williams fifth in 20.62.

There were several other top-three finishes for Caribbean athletes at the meet.

Jamaican Olympic silver medallist Danny McFarlane made an appearance in the 400 hurdles and placed second in 48.92 seconds, behind local star Periklis Lakovakis (48.51) in Race A.

Thompson fourth

American Rickey Harris landed the B Race in 49.08 with Jamaican Kemel Thompson fourth in 49.98.

In the men's long jump, Olympic champion Dwight Phillips edged fellow American Brian Johnson for the title. Both posted 8.31 metres but Phillips had a superior second-best jump 8.22m.

James Beckford, Jamaica's 1996 Olympic silver medallist and two-time World Championship medallist, secured third at 8.17m.

Americans Torri Edwards and Lauryn Williams grabbed wins in the women's sprints.

Edwards won the 100m in 11.05 seconds with Jamaican Sheri-Ann Brooks fourth in 11.15 seconds, and Williams sped to victory in the 200m in 22.70 seconds, topping Edwards.

The Cayman Islands' Cydonie Mothersill (23.05) and Brooks (23.19) placed fourth and fifth, respectively.
