It was definitely the boys night out as past students of Jamaica College came out to honour two more of their own recently.

So there were hugs, handshakes and slaps on the back, as the alumni got together to reminisce about the good old days when they donned the dark blue. Commemorative ties and other memorabilia were snapped up eagerly as a memento was a must-have at this event.

Attorney and former politician Hugh Small and businessman Richard Byles were presented with that institution's Carlton Alexander Awards for 2007. The award, named for distinguished alumni Selwyn Carlton Alexander, goes annually to two old boys who have exemplified leadership, achievement and status in their chosen fields of endeavour.

Byles, who attended Jamaica College from 1962 to 1969 is currently president and CEO of Life of Jamaica Limited since 2004. He is also the chairman of Red Stripe, Pan Caribbean Financial Services Ltd. (PCFS) and the National Water Commission (NWC). He is also a director of Pan Jam.

Hugh Small was admitted to the bars of England and Wales and Jamaica in 1963 and appointed Queen's Council in 1985. He was a member of the Jamaican House of Representatives from 1976 to 1980 and 1989 to 1994. He was also a member of the Jamaican Senate in 1976 and from 1980 to 1983. Small attended Jamaica College from 1950 to 1958.

Guests included: Derek and Maureen Jones, Dr. Peter Weller, Ted Warmington, Steven Shelton, Ambassador David Coore, Noel DaCosta, E.G. Hunter, Lambert Brown, Llewelyn Bailey and Racquel Jenkins, R. Danny Williams, Joseph A. Matalon and wife Bernadette, Arlene Harrison-Henry, Basil Smith, former JTA president Ruel Reid, Ian Andrews, Ralston Hyman, Dr. Paul Ashley and Stephen Dawkins.
