The Editor, Sir:I had reason to take my mother to the National Housing Trust (NHT) a few weeks ago. My mom is over 100 years old and because the NHT came into existence in 1976, she is not eligible for anything as she was over 70 years old at that time, and nothing was taken from her pay. Understandably, we left.
This, however, is not my reason for writing. I am writing to thank all the professional, polite and understanding staff at the NHT. From the gentlemanly (and he was!) guard at the gate, to the gentleman who brought us a wheelchair, to the pleasant young woman at the check-in window, and finally to the courteous, professional and calm young man who attended to us, I say, thank you! The whole experience was amazingly easy and effortless. There was even a ramp for the wheelchair!
It doesn't take much to make people feel satisfied. All we need to do is to treat each other with dignity and respect; the NHT got this right! Would that other offices and businesses in Jamaica do the same! In my brief four days, I encountered that old Jamaican - 'jus wait' and 'a who yuh' or 'me wi deal wid yu wen and how me feel' - stupidity from others. Again, thank you, NHT!
I am, etc.,
