JAMAICA POCKETED four medals on yesterday's opening day of the 2007 Pan American Junior Track and Field Championhips in Sao Paulo, Brazil.

Raymond Brown won silver in the boys' shot put, Julian Reid also took silver in the boys' long jump, while Schillonie Calvert and Kimberly Laing claimed bronze in the girls' 100m and 100-metre hurdles, respectively. Brown threw the shot 18.33 metres for his medal. Nicholas Robinson of the United States took gold with a throw of 18.60m while Canadian Greif Justin (18.20m) was third.

The mark bettered his own previous best of 18.31m, which was done at the National Championships, two weekends ago.

Reid's silver came with a leap of 7.55m, which was only bettered by Puerto Rico's Jorge McFarlane's 7.59m.

In the women's 100m, Calvert ran 11.47 seconds to finish third behind American Layne Lynne (11.24) and home girl Rosangela Christina O. Santos (11.47).

Samantha Henry, Jamaica's second entry in the final, finished fifth in 11.52 seconds.

Laing ran 13.85 for third in the girls' 100m hurdles, which saw the American pair of Kristi Castlin (13.02) and Queen Harrison (13.20) finish one-two.

Warren Weir did not finish in the boys' 110m hurdles.

André Thomas (1:50.45) qualified as one of the fastest losers for the boys' 800m final.

In the girls' 400m, Bobby-Gaye Wilkins (52.78) advanced to the final, but Andrea Reid (54.80) failed to make it.

Riker Hylton also qualified for the boys' 400m final with a run of 47.45 seconds.

Meanwhile, Yohan Blake ran an impressive 10.27 seconds to lead the qualifiers going into today's final of the boys' 100m.

Trinidad and Tobago's Keston Bledman, who was expected to challenge Blake when he broke the national junior record with a fast 10.11 at the Carifta Games, has the second fastest time of 10.34.

Action in the 400m hurdles for boys and girls, along with the 400m and 800m finals, is on today.
