Couples hope to cash in on lucky day
published: Saturday | July 7, 2007

Marlon Vickerman, Features Writer

For millions of people the 7th day of the 7th month in the year 2007 (7/7/7) will be no ordinary day. It is a day of luck, good experiences and fortune. Hence, it is no wonder why flocks of lovers are planning to tie the knot on this day across the seven continents.

With today July 7 known around the world as the luckiest day of the year, many people will have their eyes wide open and an ear-to-ear smile in anticipation of the rewards that will supposedly come.

For millions of people the 7th day of the 7th month in the year 2007 (7/7/7) will be no ordinary day. It is a day of luck, good experiences and fortune. Hence, it is no wonder why flocks of lovers are planning to tie the knot on this day across the seven continents in hopes of having the day's good spirits carried over into their marital lives.

Few exceptions

Checks with several bridal boutiques in the Corporate Area, however, showed that with a few exceptions, not many local couples seemed to be planning on getting married today.

Sherine Francis, general manager of Cecille's Bridal Centre and Boutique, said there was one case where a client pushed back her wedding date from June to July 7, as she wanted to have her wedding on this fortune-filled day.

Bridal Dresses and Things also had a similar case.

Other agencies said their clientele remained the same on average.

This is in great contrast to the state of affairs in the United States where there are usually many weddings planned on that day.

No requests

In what would seem an unusual case, the Emmanuel Apostolic Church on Slipe Road said the 7th of July is the only weekend since the month of June when there were no weddings slated. Not that they refused to accommodate weddings on that weekend, the representative said, but that there were really no requests. Other churches in the area echoed similar views.

Using the Corporate Area as a sample, you would have to say that Jamaicans are just not down with the lucky-day fad. This was not always the case however. In 1977 when reggae group Culture (formed by the late Joseph Hill) recorded the hit single Two Sevens Clash, warning of chaos and a 'liv an bamba yay' come July 7 of that year; many Jamaicans did not take this lightly. Many schools and businesses closed their doors when the day came and many Jamaicans refused to venture from their homes. The song reinforced a prophecy of doom and chaos that Marcus Garvey said would come to pass when the two sevens clashed (July, 7) in 1977.
