Kwesi Mugisa, Staff ReporterThe top seeds got the day off with byes to the second round, but their was still plenty of action as the Pan Caribbean Jamaica Junior Tennis Championships served off with first round action at the Eric Bell Tennis Centre yesterday.
In Boy's Under-18 action, top seed Brandon Burke and second ranked Christopher Lawson have automatically booked a place in the second round. They were joined by fifth-seeded Adam Vaz, who crushed Adrian Brooks 6-0, 6-0, while number eight Vashaun Wright eased past Ricardo Chambers 6-3, 6-1.
In other games, Kevar Bartley got by Akeem Hinds 3-6, 6-3, 6-1, Javier Mullings turned back Radika Simpson 6-1, 6-1, while Orick Angus downed Mikhel Peralto 6-2, 6-3.
In Girl's Under-18 play, top seed Simone Vranov-Brown, who is based in Florida, and number two Shaneka Knight also received a bye into the second round. Number three seeded Sicquena Sinclair is also through following a 6-1, 6-1 victory over Natoya Madden. In another match, Shantel Blackwood blew past Davina Layla 6-1, 6-0.
In Boy's Under-16 action, top ranked Winifred Weinbeer had little problems advancing as he dismissed Merrick Marshall 6-1, 6-1. Fourth-seeded Joseph Ross was also a winner, getting by Joshua Jones 6-1, 6-0. Jordan Ross (5) turned back Ramone Doyle 7-6, 6-2, while Phillip Bond (7) defeated Alexander Nunes 6-2, 6-0.
Spot booked
In the Boy's Under-14 category, Nicholas Chang blasted Janai Clarke 6-0, 6-0, Douglas Hender-son blanked Adam Henriques 6-0, 6-0 and Sean Van Wherving beat Luke Phillips 6-0, 6-1. Number five seed Christiano Brown also booked his spot in the second round with a 6-3, 6-2 win over Andrew Bell.
In the Girls' Under-16 division, Sinclair and Blackwood, who are also taking part in that event, are through to the next round, while Kalisse Kelly got by Felecia Wong 6-4, 6-1 and Isabel Whittaker trounced Kari Brown 6-0, 6-0. In the lone Girls' Under-14 game, Robin Brown beat Jodie-Ann Brookes 6-2, 6-1.
There was no play yesterday in the Under-12 and Under-10 age group.
