Don't slander the police
published: Friday | June 29, 2007

The Editor, Sir:

Permit me to reply to Kofi Jones who wrote a letter on how bad the Jamaican police are because of the shooting in a school yard.

You, sir, are sitting upstate New York and you know absolutely nothing about the Jamaica Constabulary Force (JCF). Officers of the JCF have the same training as police officers in New York or any other police force. The only difference is that officers of the JCF are poorly equipped and to use a Jamaican expression, they are sent to fetch water with a basket.

The officer who discharged his firearm in a schoolyard did so because he had to protect the children from a mad man. How dare you question the action of a cop performing his duties? Leave that to Commissioner Thomas who knows better than you how to deal with cases such as this one. I happen to know many of the top-ranking police officers and hundreds of plain clothes con-stables and not one of these men and woman would ever place Jamaican children in danger. Stop slandering the JCF.

I am, etc.,
