Nothing 'Unleashed'
published: Friday | June 29, 2007

The look on this young lady's face says it all about the failed 'Unleash', held at the Hilton Kingston, New Kingston, last Saturday. - Winston Sill/Freelance Photographer

It was a party but it seemed not many got the invitation or the directions. 'Unleash' was staged at the Hilton Kingston hotel in New Kingston last Saturday night, and that was the only certain aspect of the party. Before going into details of the misfortunes, it is probably good to go over the positives.

Now that the list of positives has been exhausted, on to the not-so-pleasant.

Venue surprise

It was previously announced that 'Unleash' would be held at the Jonkanoo Lounge, but the venue was later changed to the 18th floor of the hotel. Psych! It was not the 18th floor but the Terrace Café. Or was it? At around 11:30 p.m., the venue was completely empty, except for about three or four persons who were awaiting the guests either at the door or in the selector'scorner. That left The Gleaner wondering if we had the location right. For most party fans, 11:30 p.m. may have been early, but considering the party should have started at 9:00 p.m., the night was not looking pretty for the organisers.

Another hour passed, and by this time a little over 50 persons were now gathered at the venue, it was nothing to unleash abundance of joy about. So with very few in attendance, but nobody dancing it must have been frustrating for the promoter. Instead, people were seated on the fancy chairs that seemed to have been there for a different occasion. Then the lights went on and some men were seeing removing the chairs, leaving the patrons more on their feet and more inclined perhaps not to do cartwheels but at least sway to the music.

Music not great

As time went by, a few more patrons arrived and the chair removal strategy had some effect, as more persons were dancing, this despite the fact that the music was not all that great. Nico Bam Bam of IRI FM came to lend his talent for a while, but that did not go far. He was seen leaving the venue about an hour after. Outside the venue, others were heard calling their buddies telling them not to come as it was apparent the party was nearing its end.

The prediction was true.
