Indian workers end strike
published: Friday | June 29, 2007

THE VALLEY, Anguilla (CMC):

Some 200 Indian labourers employed on a major United States-financed resort development project in Anguilla have ended their protest action in which they were seeking better salaries, living and working conditions.

The Asian workers, who were brought here more than four months ago under an agreement with general contractor Carillion West Indies Company Ltd., staged a vigil on Monday night and spent the better part of Tuesday in a peaceful protest just outside the government's Labour Department.

Lawyers representing the Indian workers who work and reside on the American-owned Viceroy Resort and Residences on the island's west coast told reporters here late on Tuesday that an interim settlement had been reached following talks involving the government of Anguilla and Carillion's management.
